CALIAN

Hot burning coal overwhelms my senses before my feet thud into the soft ash that coats the ground. The area around me is foreign. Scattered ruins of a fortress show evidence of a battle fought not too long ago. Black crows pick at the charred remains, while starved coyotes gnaw on scattered bones.

“What happened here?” I ask. Letting my curiosity get the best of me. Krall’s ribbon like body circles around us, while Rai leads us towards the center of what use to be a courtyard. The broken-down framework of the fortress is clear despite the black scorch marks painted on all the stone that remains.

“This was the Fortress of Morte,” he answers while using his magic to clear a path for us. Stone, armor, and bones are swept to the side like the filth they are. “One of my most loyal soldiers oversaw this prison.”

“Prison?” I question. Curious to know why a man like him would need a prison.

“When you have power like mine, there are those that will try to cease it for themselves.” He states.

“You mean enemies? Master,” I calmly state. He stalls to look at me with narrowed eyes. “The traitorous fools who try to undermine your rule.” I finish trying to ease his suspicious glance.

“Yes.” He states before continuing our journey into the ruined courtyard. It is clear he is looking for something in particular. Taking in my surroundings further, I cannot make out where everything was except for the cratered pool of lava not too far off the right side of the rubble.

“What are you looking for?” Krall growls sounding particularly annoyed at being dragged here.

“If you were important enough to know, you wouldn’t need to ask that question.” Rai replies earning another growl from Krall. It is clear to me that Krall shares no true loyalty to Rai, which makes me believe his intentions of helping me are honorable.

The further we walk, the wider the path gets until we approach a wall. The only one that is untouched in the entirety of this place. There is a sort of symbol imprinted upon it. A five-point star with a ring around it.

“What is this place?” I ask.

“This,” he pauses before tracing a long black nail along each line until he completes the star. The wall begins to move, sending tremors across the ground, “is my destiny.”

Through the darkened space behind the secret door, a stone of pure gold is seated on a bed of crimson velvet.

“Is that what I think it is?” Krall asks.

“What is it?” I ask them again. It looks like a stone, but it is clear that it is so much more. “A dragon stone?”

“The stone of Valentini,” Rai replies while delicately picking it from its bed of green.

“What exactly is that?” I ask them curious about the power I feel radiating from it.

“I am surprised that the son of the dragon god does not know this powerful relic and its history.” Rai states while turning towards me. I did not
